јануари 10, 2024

The Macedonian Community Newcastle is delighted to announce the annual Macedonian Orthodox Throwing of the Cross Blessing of the Waters Ceremony “Vodici 2024”, scheduled to take place on Friday, 19th January 2024, between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm at the newly renovated Newcastle Ocean Baths. This significant event, held for over five decades, commemorates the Baptism of Christ in line with the Julian Calendar.

This year’s ceremony is especially noteworthy as it celebrates the reopening of the Newcastle Ocean Baths after a two-year renovation, funded by the City of Newcastle and its ratepayers. “We aim to turn this into a positive story that highlights the City of Newcastle’s incredible contribution and investment in preserving this beloved local landmark for future generations,” said Mr. Sash Stojcevski, President of the Macedonian Community Newcastle.

The event will feature young members of the Macedonian community participating in the traditional retrieval of the cross from the water, symbolising good health and fortune for the coming year for all participating, especially for the person who retrieves the cross. The community extends a warm invitation to Mayor Nelmes to witness this vibrant and meaningful tradition.

In a gesture of gratitude, the Macedonian Community will present a $1,500 donation to the Newcastle Ocean Baths for additional safety and heart resuscitation equipment. This donation honours the memory of a cherished community member and underscores the community’s commitment to safety and well-being.

The Macedonian Community Newcastle, along with Broadmeadow Magic Youth FC and Newcastle Suns FC, recently completed the Myers Park Adamstown Stage 1 and 2 Multipurpose Sport and Community Active Hub. This achievement was made possible

through a $1 million grant from the State Government Office of Sport and a $250,000 co-contribution from the City of Newcastle.

Mr. Stojcevski remarked, “Our community’s generosity is deeply rooted in our heritage, as reflected in the words of St. Paul in 2 Corinthians 8:1-15, where he praised the Macedonians for their willingness to give beyond their means. We continue this legacy of generosity in Newcastle, contributing significantly to the city’s cultural and community landscape.”

The Macedonian Community Newcastle looks forward to celebrating this momentous occasion with the City of Newcastle and its residents, marking a new chapter in the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
