Our Community

Macedonian Community Newcastle

The Macedonian Community of Newcastle was established in 1924 when the first Macedonian immigrant settled in Newcastle. They came to escape persecution and find better opportunities. Over the years, new migrants have continued to arrive due to similar reasons. The Macedonian Community has been an active part of the wider community, with the establishment of a cultural centre and church, football clubs, and various groups, including women’s, pensioner’s, and language groups.

The Macedonian Community over recent years has undertaken succession planning, resulting in the management of community affairs passing to the younger generations which will ensure sustainability of Macedonian Culture in our region.

Today, the Macedonian Community Newcastle has an estimated 10,000 members and continues to contribute to the broader Newcastle community. They have provided financial assistance to their members and other Macedonian Community churches, and have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for various causes, such as cancer research and the rural bushfire appeal.
